What are Key Stages

Key stages are blocks of education that your child has to learn through their school life, it is the way the education system is split up and each key stage will be split into levels and your child will be in the level suiting their ability.

A key stage is not a school year, each key stage will last a number of years, at the end of each key stage will be a standardised exam covering the subjects for that stage and this will assess whether or not children are reaching the set targets set out by the government regarding the knowledge that they should have achieved at that stage in their life.

Each key stage is split into levels

• Level W – Working towards level 1, very weak
• Level 1 – Average for a typical 5-year-old
• Level 2 – Average for a typical 7-year-old
• Level 3 – Average for a typical 9-year-old
• Level 4 – Average for a typical 11-year-old
• Level 5 – Average for a typical 13-year-old
• Level 6 – Average for a typical 14-year-old
• Level 7 – Above average for typical 14-year-old

So, at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2), students are expected to be at level 2. At the end of Key Stage 2 (Year 6), students are expected to be at level 4.
